	It was would be since I was talking about a past occurence of the word, is would pertain to the present where I know about correct spelling.

	"It is" is the correct tense, because the other verbs you used in the sentence were in the present tense. "Thanks, I rarely use that word and didn't know it's an iregular with two s's." Use and know are both in the present tense, therefore you use "it is." All verb tenses must agree for a sentence to be grammatically correct.

	Use is still present because that fact is still current. In context to the conversation, I was correct in use not used but incorrect in is not was. Also, know wouldn't change even if I said used.
