| n board the Lusitania were numerous American passengers. Also, the Germans had been sinking American transport ships in the Atlanic, but we preferred not to do anything about it because the US was isolationist at the time(not wanting to be involved with foreign countries.) The sinking of the Lusitania was one of the last straws. But, that combined with the "Zimmerman Note" (a message sent to Mexico from Germany promising Mexico the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Texas and I believe California, if they were to attack the United States. From there we went to war in the trenches of Western Europe. Yet, we had been "involved" previously both with the sending of supplies (one of the reasons for the attacks from German U-Boats) and Americans who joined the French to fly combat airplanes (first war in history that used airplanes) little more that a decade after they had first been flown. There wasn't too much outcome from the war, positive at least. Almost an entire generation of young men lost their lives, adding up to a total of several millions casualties. And the loss of the war for the Central Powers only fostered bitter resentment which lead up to the origins of Hitler's Nazi movement in Germany and Mussolini's Facist movement in Italy. |
