when coming to a stop at a red light do you shift to 1st gear or do you shift to neutral?

if you wanted to race, of course you'd start in 1st.
but does anyone hold the clutch, shift from 3rd to neutral, then brake? is it possible? does it effect your car?

no i don't drive standard yet, but my parents dont either so i have to learn with friends/buy my own car and learn myself.

i've just been watching youtube videos and stuff but it's not focusing too much on that. from what i can see, some people use neutral and it works fine. i'd rather that as it's easier than downshifting multiple times.

well i have enough to drop like 3 grand down after i get my license and pay for the other expenses.

but i'm really considering a cheap sub $1000 car to learn to drive standard plus i'm sure i'll have a few fender benders

everyone will hate, but i'm considering a Neon

since i have my Learner's /Beginner's for over 3 months now, i can just take a few courses (by the hour) and get training until they think i'm ready to pass the final test.

i think like 6 hours will do then i shouldn't have a problem passing

I always dropped mine out of 4th into neutral and it never hurt the clutch.

i had a feeling you could do that. seriously takes a lot off your mind when first learning to brake.

i drive a 5 speed and mostly always drop from first to neutral when coming to stops. it has no effect on the clutch, same as putting an automatic in neutral it does nothing

Not sure what country you live in Eazy..but if your thinking of taking a standard for a road test for your licence be sure to down shift, but if your just driving around you can either down shift or pop it out of gear and coast to your stop and their is no need for you to touch the cluch if your coasting..

yeah i know shifting to neutral won't effect the clutch, but i was wondering if it had any effect on the car in general (to drive in neutral then brake).

if i'm heading to a set of lights and it turns yellow before i reach it in gear 3 or 4, can i shift to neutral (push the clutch, shift) then coast plus brake to a stop? that was my main question but it's been confirmed that i can do that now.

anyway i'm not taking a standard for the test, i'm not going to start driving one until after i get my license. i'm going to take a few hours of training before hand until the person says i can pass, then i'll do the road test. i've signed up already i'm just waiting on a reply.
